Our skin often mirrors our sense of well-being and health. The skin is the largest bodily organ and is constantly under environmental stress, including UV light and pollution. Skin provides a first line of defense against environmental stressors. When we are stressed, our skin needs more time to recover and the process may trigger dermatological disorders, including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and rosacea. You might eat healthy and yet you your skin still suffers from affects of stress. If your skin is dry and flaky, chances are you are stressed you may not be drinking enough water. Have you pulled an all-nighter or are running on a few hours of sleep a day? This can influence your circadian rhythm (internal clock) that regulates your sleep and can result in swollen eyes, dark circles, and premature aging. The best way to de-stress your skin is to go to bed at approximately the same time and get 7-9 hours of sleep. Also, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, use SPF during daytime, and take a few deep breaths during the day. What you put on your skin may also stress it.
